(More customer reviews)I agree with Dr Robin: this is a piece of junk.The gears do not mesh properly and the design of the cooker is so bad that a dead frog could pop corn better.The gears skipped almost always, and when I held the cooker so they didn't skip the machine still would not pop 4 ounces of corn.The corn gets stuck, impacted, and burnt and afterward had to be pried out of the cooker with a lot of effort.

Rather than try returning it, I took it on as a fix-up project.I moved the main motor over one third of an inch and that fixed the gear problems, which tells me the problem should not have existed in the first place had any thought gone into it.

Then I replaced the flip lids on the cooker with lighter weight material that would let the popped corn out easier.After much trial and error, I finally got the popper so it worked with two ounces of corn.Much more and it still failed miserably.

Even in the best cases, the popped corn in the cooker pushed out half of the un-popped kernels. A bad design all around and obviously never tested.I recommend avoiding this and any related product.Personally, I'm also putting Discount Tommy on my "avoid-at-all-cost" list for endorsing and selling this.

(More customer reviews)This is the fourth stir crazy corn popper I have owned in about 30 years.They last a very long time.It pops more of the corn because it stirs as it pops.You can use a lot of oil or a very small amount, whichever you like.You can pop a little or a lot.If the stirring mechanisum gets stuck, it reverses and turns the other way. It just works great.The only con I can see is that the base is not immersable, but it is very easy to clean.When the corn has popped you flip it over and the top becomes the bowl.

(More customer reviews)I did a lot of research on these before deciding on this fantastic machine.Trust me, you can look a long time and not find anything close to this value at this price point or even one much, much higher.Highly recommend for that finishing touch on your home theater.

Pros:
- 3 switches for power (1 kettle stirrer, 1 heating lamp/under carriage heating element and 1 for kettle heat). This will add a lot of life to your machine!
- Large 8 ounce kettle pops plenty of corn for a family of 4 or use a smaller portion (or portion pack) for movie night with your spouse.
- EASY assembly and very mobile.Essentially it comes in 4 pieces, the main unit, the cart and a couple of tires.It took longer to get rid of the boxes than to assemble it.We have actually wheeled this out in front of the house so my son can sell popcorn and lemonade, its that mobile.
- Storage cabinet holds a lot of supplies

Cons:
- A bit on the messy side.The side windows need to be wiped down every couple of uses but a paper towel usually does the trick.
- Metal popcorn scoop handle came off after a few weeks, but its easily glued back on.
- Makes my wife want to eat a lot of popcorn.Seriously....

From the time you decide to have popcorn to actually having the popcorn is less than 5 minutes.I recommend the popcorn packs but also look for other coconut oil packs for popcorn machines and "Flavacol" for that true theater taste.Everyone who sees the machine and has the popcorn wants one of there own!

I had done a lot of searching to try & find something that would fit in to our budget but was still of a commercial grade. What a GREAT find this was! The machine is great, pops the corn quickly, cleans up very easily & the drawer in the bottom for the unpopped kernels is wonderful! I also ordered the popcorn portion packs from Discount Tommys (several times now) as I didn't want to mess with measuring oil, popcorn etc. I was a little skeptical at how it would taste but I can honestly tell you popcorn became our biggest seller this fall at our concession stand. Customer Service is great! They shipped everything quickly & the packing was superb! I wold definitely recommend this popcorn machine for home use & concessions/church events etc!

I love popcorn and I didn't think it could get any better than popping it from my old cast iron skillet. Well, due to a health problem I can't use an iron skillet anymore. So I looked at about ten other brands of poppers and those that were comparable to this popper were like $100-$200 dollars more. So that did it for me, plus this one has a warming pan and heat lamp that make the popcorn crispy and tender some features that some of the others didn't have.

We had all the family for Christmas and the popper was in continual use they all just loved it--so what can I say, this is a great deal and the qualtiy is top grade: stainless steel popper, the power plug is magnetic so you don't have to pull hard to get the cord off. The popper-pot comes our easily for cleaning, don't emmerse the pot in water though, the instructions tell you how to clean it.

Well, that about covers it, oh, except one thing, it's 7 degrees outside right now and the days are dark and gloomy with storm, popcorn sure brings a smile to people's faces when they here it and smell its aroma; we throw on a movie and settle in while the wind and snow rages outside.

I really reccomend this popper, oh and there's just me and the wife at home in case you're wondering about the popper being too big for small families--the popcorn stores nicely and it doesn't last long because its so tender and crunchy you'll be snacking on it all day.

I've read stories about other manufacturer's popcorn makers gouging Teflon off their cases, this one is nicely manufactured, works great, works FAST and is easy to clean! I don't like microwave popcorn and I cannot believe I've been shaking a big pan on the stovetop to make popcorn compared with how easy this popcorn popper is! If you like popcorn this is 100% worth the money!

(More customer reviews)Well, I surely gave it a fair try:popped 3 batches of various sizes, closely following all directions, using fresh popping corn from two separate packages.Results:

* Noticeable cooked plastic odor and taste in the popped corn - yuck.
(... when I returned it to my local retailer, the clerk told me he had noticed the same problem in their sample...)

* You like your popcorn fluffly and light?All three batches were denser and heavier than standard popped corn.

* Far too many uncooked kernels.

* Poor build quality:the base had a loose part rattling inside that sounded like a broken piece.

*Seating the hotplate into the base takes some getting used to.At first I thought I had it seated properly and the rotor moved, but the plate refused to heat, requiring that I reseat it repeatedly and very precisely to get the cooking element to connect properly.

It's a shame.I had high hopes for this product (I trust and respect the Cuisinart name - I have one of their food processors).I liked that it had an anodized heating surface - believing that should make it very durable.Results were terrible though.

Presto 04830 PowerPop Microwave Multi-Popper Review

(More customer reviews)This gadget has really hooked us on popcorn as a snack. We had been getting wonderful microwave popcorn from Yoder Popcorn (on the Web), but it got expensive. Then I noticed that they said that the Presto popper could be used with any of their bulk popcorn -- at much lower cost. What amazed us was how much better their already outstanding popcorn tasted with the Presto! And the ability to make it with the oil of our choice (we like olive oil) or no oil at all is a great bonus. Entering "presto powercup concentrator" in Google turned up a number of sources (including Amazon) for this essential insert -- we ordered ten packs to save on shipping and are sure we will use them in a reasonable time.
The size is great for us -- just about as much as a standard microwave pack per popperful. I do not see it as very feasible for more than four or maybe six people at a time, however.
While the Powercups do add to the cost, it still is cheaper than the microwave packs. Using the Yoder popcorn as an example (since the same popcorn is available either in bulk or microwave packs) and assuming that one gets 3 pops per Powercup (half of what Presto says is feasible) the cost comes out about as follows:
Premium white or yellow popcorn, 3.5 oz = $0.13
Olive oil, 0.5 oz = 0.10
Powercup = 0.08
Amoritization of popper = 0.02
Total = $0.33
By contrast, a 3.5 oz microwave pouch of the same popcorn costs $0.65 in bulk.
Actual final costs will be greater for both due to shipping charges, of course, but these do not favor one over the other.

I've had a number of popcorn poppers 'cause I'm a true fan, whether unadorned popcorn or 'fancied up'.When the hot air poppers came out about 20 years ago I bought a couple of them, but they always seem to make chewy popcorn that'll stick in the back of your throat.I've got a mint-condition Mirro aluminum electric popper from the sixties and it'll burn corn in the bottom before you can turn around.
West Bend used to make this same type popper but without the stirrer.I had that one also, and it still left a fair number of kernels at the bottom.
The stirring rod is what makes the difference with this popper.Not only will it pop more kernels in ANY brand of popcorn, but it will pop far more with the less expensive brands like Jolly Time.It's typical to get no more than a tablespoon or less of unpopped kernels. The popcorn turns out perfectly done, from the earliest to the last popped.If you look at the photo, the disc on the top is a removable cover; under there is an indention with multiple holes.You can take butter or margarine and spread it around when you set the machine up.Then, as the machine starts popping, the steam melts the butter and it goes on the corn!Or, if you prefer buttering later, just leave the lid on.When the corn is popped, you simply flip the appliance over and the large dome becomes the serving bowl.
The dome and the disc on top have been through my dishwasher dozens of times without any problem.If I hand-wash it, it always feels a little greasy.The bottom, heating part of the appliance is nonstick; you simply wipe it out with a soapy dishrag or paper towel.Couldn't be easier.
This appliance is light in weight and fits fine in one of my overhead cabinets. For only a small amount of oil, it'll make six quarts of the best popcorn you can find!Plus, its tolerance to less-expensive non-gourmet corns means you'll spend less money.Highly recommended!

West Bend 82386 Kettle Krazy Popcorn Popper and Nut Roaster Review

(More customer reviews)I shopped around quite a bit for a popcorn popper.I was tired of microwave stuff, and don't like the results from a hot-air popper.

There are several like this, with a motorized stirring rod and a cooking surface, but either they get poor reviews for reliability (Cuisinart), or were too expensive, difficult to maintain, scratched the Teflon cooking surface, etc.

This model is very similar to the West Bend Stir Crazy, but has two heat settings (nuts or popcorn) and - most importantly - a much thicker stirring rod.With the more basic Stir Crazy, the rod is thin and easily flexed (think coat-hanger) and diverted by the weight of the popcorn itself, causing it to be pressed into the Teflon surface while rotating, thus scratching the Teflon.This model has a MUCH thicker stirring rod (I took a few pictures and added them above to demonstrate) that never makes contact with the surface.

The popper pretty much performs like it's supposed to.I was curious to see if the lid stayed in place while popping a full batch, because is simply sits on top and is only held in place by the weight of the cover.It does in deed stay put.

It doesn't seem to matter what brand of popping corn you use.Name brand or generic seem to perform the same - very well.I have never used the butter well, because I don't like how you wind up with a few soggy bits of corn rather than all of it having a consistent flavor and texture.I've experimented some and found that simply adding several pats of butter to the oil and corn does a great job of giving you a nice mild butter flavor.I thought maybe the butter would burn, but that did not happen.I also reduced the oil by 1/2T Spoon, but don't recommend reducing the oil much more than that, since the distributed hot oil is what promotes the rapid kernel popping.I also added salt directly to the oil and popping corn at the beginning of the process, which worked well enough, but was more difficult to clean in the end.I'm also worried that it might over time scratch the Teflon surface, so I don't plan to do that again.

The bowl is moderate thickness, and appears fairly sturdy.It is not flexible, so I imagine a hard drop might crack it.Because it is a hard clear plastic, it is susceptible to scratching if you use any kind of abrasive to clean it.I'm not sure why you would, considering it only takes a bit of soap and hot water to clean popcorn/oil/butter residue, but whatever.

Finally, it comes with a few recipes in the manual.We've tried a couple and they turned out well.One of them was Scotcheroo Popcorn - which is a sort of gooey sweet treat that includes chocolate and butterscotch chips.

All together we are really, really happy with this popper.I recommend it without hesitation.

UPDATE: UPDADE:I often wonder about these reviews.99% of the good reviews are written in the first few days of ownership.This tell you nothing of the longevity of the product.So, I am back after a year to tell you that I still love this popper.It still does a great job, and has had absolutely no issues.
